What Is This Session About?
Despite the diversity of learner preferences, most educational materials are text-based, such as PowerPoint slides and hardcopy handouts. At times where visuals are used, they are merely used to ‘beautify’ slides or fill in empty spaces. Yet, graphics are powerful tools for unpacking complicated information into key messages (Li & Molder, 2021), allowing content to be more appealing and enjoyable to take in. Pedagogically, studies have shown that graphics are useful learning aids (Steyn et al., 2021) and can convey emotional nuances. Many individuals feel that their ability to draw is a major hurdle for creating original visualisations. This programme builds participants’ confidence in drawing, where participants will create their own unique graphics or illustrations and apply them to their work. In addition, they will learn one of the seven key considerations of useful design and experiment with its applications.
What Does The Session Cover?
- Workplace learning: Visuals are learning artefacts that enable self-directed bite-sized learning at workplace. It is key to design visuals that effectively chunk information, so workers can assimilate new knowledge into practice..
- Learning modes and contextualized learning experience: While many sources estimate that 70 to 80 percent of people are visual learnings, much of content today is delivered in verbal forms (i.e. text and speech), limiting the impact of learning. Adult educators need to possess skills to unpack information in both visual and verbal forms to enhance the effectiveness of their delivery.
- Learners support: Visuals have the ability to lower the cognitive load due to the lessened reliance on literacy skills, therefore allowing learners to concentrate on appreciating the content.

On a usual day, you can see her visualizing content live in meetings, conferences and events, providing people the visual snapshot of their content and helping people learn better. With a background in the learning and development field, she strongly believes creating “art that people can understand” is key and wishes to inspire others with the courage to draw. June is a certified facilitator and holds a Masters in Learning and Professional Development. She has a lifelong mission in exploring the use of visuals as pedagogy tools.
